The Right Moves
Photograph by Anup and Manoj Shah
Males will be males: Zebra bachelors in Masai Mara horse around in preparation for serious battles later on. Eventually they'll have to fight established stallions to win females and breed. Bachelors form harems by successfully competing to abduct fillies, or unbred females. But according to behavioral ecologist Richard Estes, "there's sort of a gentlemen's agreement not to challenge a herd stallion's ownership of his mares (females he has been with). His property rights make him mightier than any challenger."
