Atlantic walruses are highly tactile creatures, spending much of their time in congregations piled on top of one another. Females and their pups, like this pair near Igloolik, Nunavut, Canada, are particularly touchy. Mothers gently stroke their young with their whiskers, called vibrissae, inhaling their babies' distinct scent, which they remember for life.
