High Five. Give $5. Save Big Cats.

National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative is creating a worldwide virtual high five chain in support of big cats for World Lion Day, and we need your help!

Big cats in the wild are disappearing at an alarming rate. Leading up to World Lion Day (August 10), we’re promoting awareness about the plight of these majestic creatures by sharing high fives on social media.

It’s easy to participate. Share the Facebook and Twitter posts below with your social networks. Tag five friends to send them a virtual high five. Give $5 (or more!) by donating. Then watch the chain grow across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

Want to get creative? Instead of using our photo when you share on social media, create your own high-five photo or video masterpiece. We encourage you to think outside the box! Make sure you use #5forBigCats, then return here to see your creation in our gallery below.

Happy high fiving!

Give $5!

In addition to sharing high fives on social media, we’re also raising money to preserve lions and other big cats—and their habitats—through National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative.

About the Big Cats Initiative

National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative was founded in 2009 with Dereck and Beverly Joubert—filmmakers, conservationists, and explorers-in-residence—as a long-term effort to halt the decline of big cats in the wild. The Big Cats Initiative supports efforts to save big cats through assessment, on-the-ground conservation, education, and a global public-awareness campaign to shine a light on this issue called "Cause an Uproar," launched in partnership with Nat Geo WILD. With your support, the Big Cats Initiative has funded over 80 grants across more than 25 countries. See where in the world we're supporting on-the-ground research and conservation to help save big cats in the wild. Learn More

Nat Geo WILD presents a week dedicated to nature’s fiercest felines—big cats—creatures of magnificent strength, ferocity, and beauty that are rapidly facing extinction. With visually stunning and powerful stories from around the world, get closer than ever before to lions, tigers, cheetahs, panthers, and more as you share in their triumphs, defeats, and epic struggles to survive.
